2.7   Floating “Olympic Facilities”

                                                                                                                        Back to Index

The suggested central idea-concept, proposed and developed by Prof. M. Burt, is to design and construct a modular array of floating, transportable state-of-the-art Olympic facilities, capable of traversing the oceans. This array could be borrowed/rented (under the supervising of international sport and public organizations such as IOC, UNESCO, FIFA etc.) by the interested hosting nations of mega-sport and cultural events – Olympic Games, World Championships, World, European, Asian and American Cup Finals, World Grand Prix, Student, Paralympics, Masters, Special, and other Games, Concerts and entertainment shows, exhibitions, conferences and fairs, - the number of such events increases every year, and the rise in their frequency and the number of spectators and participants is expected.

The modular floating Olympic complex is to be moored for the duration of the event in proximity of major port cities and reasonably protected coastal marine environments like bays, lagoons and piers (Fig. 14).

The proposed floating array might include the following:

  • The Central Stadium, equipped to serve up to 150,000 spectators with main and spare multi-functional pitches and perimeter running tracks; including a Media Center.
  • Auxiliary Sport Facilities Module, for various branches of sport, water sports included.
  • The “Olympic Village” and visitors accommodations; an urban module(s) with all the servicing and infrastructure.
  • “Sport University Campus”, with all the required facilities and infrastructures; the module could be integrated with accommodations for staff and their families.
