2.27 Floating Breakwaters.

                                                                 Back to Index

Floating breakwaters are considered as a good and cost-effective substitute for the conventional type of breakwaters, especially for fishing harbors, recreational harbors, marinas, etc., where the tranquility requirements are low (see Fig. 64). Floating breakwaters have gained significance in the recent years because of their basic advantages, such as flexibility, easy mobilization, installation, and retrieval. The system can be fabricated on land, towed to the site, and installed along any desired alignment with ease (Murali, 1997). A general rule of thumb is to have a breakwater if the significant wave height is greater than 4 m (Watanabi, 2004).

The tension leg platforms (TLP) can also be used as a floating breakwater to reduce wave height as well as wave forces and then protect coastal bank against assaulting wave (Chen, 2008).
